The NFC champion Seattle Seahawks opened as 2.5-point favorites over the AFC champion New England Patriots before the line quickly dropped to a historic pick ’em between the two teams, according to RJ Bell of Pregame.com. It would be the first time in history that the Super Bowl won’t have a favorite, though the line will obviously change between now and the game. In fact, it already has in some places. Bell reports the MGM Grand has now made the Patriots a one-point favorite.
If there does end up being a consensus underdog, it wouldn’t be all bad news. Underdogs have won the game straight-up in four of the past five Super Bowls. Throughout history, the outlook hasn’t been as rosy, however. Favorites are 33-15 straight up overall and 26-18-2 against the spread. There’s no record for pick ’em games, of course.
