Oprah and ‘Selma’ cast to march in Alabama to honor Martin Luther King

New Pittsburgh Courier

Media magnate and Selma producer Oprah Winfrey will join the cast members in a march Sunday in Selma, Ala. to commemorate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., Paramount Pictures announced Friday.

Winfrey will be accompanied by the likes of Golden Globe nominated director Ava DuVernay and Golden Globe nominated star David Oyelow, who portrayed MLK in the critically-acclaimed film. The event will pay homage to King?s leadership involvement in the legendary Selma-to-Montgomery march, the subject of the Academy Award-nominated film, which lead to the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Edmund Pettus Bridge march, led by living legend and Georgia Congressman John Lewis, is also known as ?Bloody Sunday? as law enforcement violently pushed back the predominantly black marchers. Lewis was nearly killed by police in the melee.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the historic bill by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
